Bamboo Flooring and Furniture – An Interior Decorator’s Dream
As we have previously discussed on this site, bamboo has been around for a long time and has been involved in our lives ever since our ancestors discovered it. One use that is making an entry into mainstream Western lives is bamboo flooring. This is not actually a recent trend in the world; rather, it is a furnishing style that has been ongoing for centuries that originates in the East.
The history of bamboo in the home begins in Asia. Here, specifically China, bamboo has been used for hundreds of years to furnish homes. They use the plant to create floors and even their furniture. As we look toward the present these products have begun making their way to the West. The major import of bamboo for flooring started in the mid-1990’s and from there, the industry boomed, accumulating a net worth over 25 billion dollars by 2012.
The floors themselves are high quality and more sustainable than materials like oak. While an oak tree grows very slowly, bamboo can be harvested for flooring and furnishing around six years of age. From here, it will need to be laminated, but then it is ready to go! Bamboo is once again finding its way into our lives with a sustainable, eco-friendly process.
And for any of you questioning the quality of the floors. Bamboo floors are actually three times harder than oak and last just as long. Bamboo is even just as versatile of flooring as wood. It does not scratch easy, it doesn’t contract or expand excessively, and it can even be refinished.
Few plants offer the strength and beauty that bamboo does. It is truly a plant of emmaculate design.
