Bamtech: the Bamboo Home & Construction App

It seems like everything has an app these days. Certainly with the internet, it has never been easier to find out information on bamboo. Just go open your Wikipedia app and you’ll find that out firsthand. Would you like to use all of your bamboo knowledge to build something? Well look no further than the Bamtech App. The app was developed by the South Asia Bamboo Foundation, and launched on February 22, 2018. “The app explains all aspects of bamboo, right from cutting down to treatment, joinery and finishing,” said Salam Kamesh, the founder and executive of the foundation.

The SABF says that with proper treatment, a bamboo home can last more than 23 years. Some may be skeptical of these numbers, but the idea of an affordable and eco-friendly home is something that a lot of people will want to jump on. There’s no saying how long a structure could last if given the proper care and concern.

The SABF recently signed a deal with US-based firm, Pacific Bamboo Resource (PBR) for construction of bamboo toilets in Africa. PBR will implement the project while SABF provides technical support.

The app was developed by an Ahmedabad-based-firm, and looks to aid in helping with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s goal of three core houses by 2022. He also looks to use bamboo to construct toilets and schools with bamboo. India is the second largest producer of bamboo in the world, so it’s an understatement to say that it can benefit from the app.

The app hopes to help brand bamboo as a major player in construction. Bamboo has fought the image that it is a poor man’s construction material for years. With increased awareness and availability of information, the app aims to bring more people around to building large constructions with bamboo and not just furniture.

Bamtech is available on the Google Play store for free, and is sponsored by the Building Materials and Technology Promotion Council of The Union Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs. The government of India has put a lot of time and effort behind this app. They hope that the trend of technological advancements can help to increase the use of bamboo.
