As one of the fastest growing tropical plants on the planet, bamboo is by far one of the most dynamic, yet overlooked and under-utilized materials in the world. In fact, did you know that you can contribute to the fight against climate change by simply planting a small amount of bamboo in your garden? A typical bamboo grove will generate 35% more oxygen than a similar collection of standard trees, and although this is probably a few more bamboo plants than you had anticipated for your backyard, the point is still the same: bamboo works wonders for our global environment.

An incredibly diverse set of cultivators and farmers from across the world have come to depend on bamboo in their everyday lives. Within the past few years, bamboo has started to become a primary source of renewable bioenergy in many Asian and African nations, including China, Ethiopia, Ghana, India, Madagascar, Mozambique, the Philippines, and Vietnam. By creating and manufacturing bamboo charcoal and briquettes from solid biomass, these countries have been able to provide long-term, private household energy for millions of citizens.
